Wings ~ Goodnight Tonight 1979 Disco Purrfection Version

Remixing this one was a lot of fun! I think I found a few ways to make it a little more exciting for those who already knew the song and introduce others to it for the first time.

Throughout 1978 McCartney was working on his next Wings LP. With the lovely Linda at his side along with Denny Laine, the began work on "Back To The Egg". During those sessions, McCartney recorded an instrumental backing track and set the unfinished song aside. He pulled the tape out to complete the song he titled "Goodnight Tonight" as he was considering adding one more track to the LP. McCartney felt that the song did not fit the rock sound of the rest of the album and decided to put it out as a standalone single.

The band got together to do a promotional video and conceived a memorable one. Set in the the 1930's, the men were dressed to the nines in tuxes with slicked back hair interspersed with footage of a live performance. Linda looked pretty good too!

It was released March 31, 1979 with two lengths, the studio version timing out at 7:14 on the 12" disco version and the 7" length at 4:15.

They promoted the song, but ultimately was not included on the "Back To The Egg" LP. You have to give the guy credit though, he chose to not include it on the album since it did not fit thematically. It's an uptempo disco style pop song in the vein of "Silly Love Songs" without the studio gloss, quite different from the fully produced disco pop music at the time. It became a #5 pop hit and did not chart disco. This was my song of the summer, light and airy perfect for listening on the radio or dancing in the clubs as a "toe tapper" something to get you warmed up for a whole night of dancing.
