For those who want to know a breakdown in costs on how to go to the Maldives using points and miles.

Flight prices:From the East coast range from $700-$2,000 a person depending on what month you go in, and how far in advance you book it. Here is when we use airline miles and hotel points to our advantage. We used our United miles at 85k miles plus $100 in taxes each in April of 2016.
Hotel price: Currently, the Beach Villa (cheapest room) is $456-$480 a night (plus taxes) or 95k pts per night. The over-water bungalow (cheapest one) is $893-$940 per night (plus taxes) so pretty much $1,000. These prices were the same back then too.We booked a Beach Villa with our Hilton points (getting the 5th night free) and no additional taxes to pay because we paid with points. 7 nights = 570k pts. Depending on when you go and how early you look it up you can get the over-water bungalow (Water Villa) for 95k pts a night too this is a STEAL.

Overall: we spent between $3,500-$3,700 on this trip in total and that was with a free flight and free room. This was the most expensive trip we have ever been on. While this sounds like a lot to many, this could have easily been a $10k+ trip as most people I know who've gone have spent. So, while $3,500 in the Maldives may sound crazy to some, paying $10k+ sounds crazy to us lol. Conclusion:Is the Maldives worth it? DEFINITELY, especially if you love luxury and being pampered.
