Hi, my name is Elliot and when I was in high school, I got a terrifying disease that had me locked in my room for weeks.

In the weeks leading up to my disease, everything was normal. I went to school, went to swim meets, we even hosted a family party at our house a few days before I got sick. We invited my Aunt Carol... who always covers me in kisses like I’m 5. I hadn’t even had my first kiss yet—the last thing I wanted to do was have my Aunt kiss me on the lips... GOD.

Anyway, everything seemed pretty normal for a while. But one Saturday morning, I started to have some horrible body aches. I woke up and I KNEW something was wrong. It was a gross, horrible feeling—like my muscles were all throbbing underneath my skin. I told my dad I wasn’t feeling well, and that just made everything worse. He started yelling at me, angry that I was “lazy” and “faking it” so I wouldn’t have to go. My dad loved swimming more than I did. It was like he lived his dreams through me. Even though I was shaking and felt feverish, I pulled myself out of bed to go. It was better than fighting him...
