A Sugar May Have Helped Protect Itself Before Life Began #Shorts

Could a fragile sugar have helped keep its own chemical protection available before life began?

A study published September 22, 2026 in Scientific Reports found that ribose increases the solubility of borate-bearing minerals and helps prevent calcium-induced precipitation, keeping borate in water. Borate-ribose complexes are known to protect ribose under alkaline conditions. The reciprocal chemistry could help make origin-of-life experiments more geologically realistic.

This is laboratory evidence for a possible chemical step, not proof of how life began and not the creation of life. The ancient landscape and molecule symbols are original conceptual illustrations, not photographs, real molecular trajectories, or measured particles. The borate-protection effect is prior context; the new result concerns mineral solubility and precipitation.
