Japanese Tunnels Rabaul & Historical WW II Ship Wrecks | My Papua New Guinea Experience Part 6

I traveled to Papua New Guinea solo in 2014. In this episode I visit Japanese Tunnels from World War two and historical WW II Ship Wrecks left in rabaul Harbour.
Rabaul, New Britain Island of Papua New Guinea is a very significat place for World War II as it was major Japanese base in WW II and Japanese army created an amazing complex of underground tunnels to protect themselves from air raids. The Japanese troops lived in these tunnels, they had underground hospitals, HQ, wearhouses where they stored ammunition, partrs for planes, boats, machinery. All these japanese tunnels were dug by hand and you can still see the marks from picks and muttocks. Small holes in the walls were made for oil lamps. At the moment there are thousands of bats, spiders, snakes and various insect including malaria mosquitos . There are big tunnels for barges and ships, you can still see leftovers of rusty ships inside. The Japanese also dug submarine tunnels. They used labour captured in Malaysia, China and Singapore and most of these workers died of some disease.

Rabaul in WW II: Battle of Bismarck Sea 1943 and Battle of Rabaul 1942

In this episode I also manage to organize a trip to Tavurvur Volcano which erupted only a few weeks after I left (Tavurvur Eruption 29th August 2014) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-28978089

I also see many ship wrecks from world war two left in Rabaul harbour, completely rusty and rotten. This is a piece of history right there.
