Blinds particularly venetian, vertical and roller blinds offer a high degree of control over light levels in a room, perfect for living rooms or bedrooms where bright sunlight can cause glare on television screens and computer monitors.

BEFORE YOU MEASURE YOUR WINDOW FOR BLINDS.

1. Take a good look at your window to decide if you want to fit your blind inside the window opening (recess blind) or across the front of the window (exact blind).

2. If you are buying a Readymade blind, always order the blind that is wider and with a drop that is longer than necessary and then carefully follow the instructions that are supplied with the blind as to how to trim the blind down to the correct size at home if necessary.

3. If you want to order a blind that fits across the front of the window opening, then check you have at least 7 cms either side of the window or the blind will look too small.

4. If your window recess has protruding window handles, phone sockets, tiles, a dado rail, or any other obstructions, you will need to fit the blind across the front of the window or the gaps around the blind will compromise on privacy and light control.

5. Dormer windows are often the same width as the window frame. If curtains are fitted in this situation, they will often obstruct the light levels in a small dormer, making blinds the best choice of window treatment.

WHEN TO CHOOSE AN EXACT BLIND (across the front of the window).

a. If a roller blind is going to be used as the main window treatment in the room, then it will look far more attractive if it is fitted to the outside of the window as it will make the window appear larger and consequently become more of a feature.

b. Window sills are often one of the few flat surfaces, particularly in a small room, for displaying ornaments, floral arrangements, kitchen utensil jars, recipe books etc. This is a case for fitting an exact blind because when the blind is closed, it will pull down in front of the window sill, leaving everything still arranged nicely behind the blind.

c. Often rooms have a combination of window dimensions which can also vary in height. Fitting the roller blinds all at the same height, regardless of whether a greater proportion of wall will be concealed behind some of the blinds, will visually standardise the window heights, giving a more unified finish.

d. Blackout roller blinds are far more effective if they are fitted to the outside of the window as it will help to prevent daylight seeping around the sides of the blind.

e. If your windows are old and draughty, unattractive or you have privacy issues, then an exact blind will help to stop the draughts, conceal the finish of the window frame and ensure total privacy for the room.

f. The roller blind will need to be fitted across the front of the window opening if there is not sufficient space inside the window recess to accommodate the roller blind cylinder and fixing brackets. A recess blind will need to fit within the window recess, finishing at least flush with the wall, not protruding out of the recess.

WHEN TO CHOOSE A RECESS BLIND

a. If your blind is going to be used as part of a layered window treatment, there will be a curtain pole or curtain track fitted across the outside of the window, so the roller blind will have to fit inside the window recess or it will interfere with the operation of the curtains.

b. Roller blinds are often chosen not only for their special properties, but also for their minimal features. A recess blind fitted in certain circumstances such as behind a kitchen sink or over a bathroom basin will make a better practical choice than fitting an exact blind as it can be fitted as far away as possible from the splashes.

c. Fitting a blind in the recess of a window in a room with small dimensions such as a cloakroom will give visual added depth to the room.
