Castell'Alfero | Monferrato | Piemonte | Italia

Castell’Alfero is a picturesque, peaceful village in the lower Monferrato in the Italian region of Piedmont. It is located about 40 km (25 miles) east of Turin and about 9km (6 miles) north of Asti. The population is only about 2,700.
Monferrato's unique countryside is accented with soft, rolling hills, rich-soiled plains, divided by rivers and forests, set before the majestic backdrop of the Alps. Monferrato is the first Vineyard Landscape to be recognised by UNESCO. It is a place of traditions, of home-baked flavours, of delicious Italian cooking and of culture and festivals.

Tamburello is the local sport. a court game invented in the northern provinces of Italy during the 16th century. It is played with a tambourine-type racquet and a scoring is similar to tennis.

The Castle – Castello dei Conti Amico – was first built in 1290. The current appearance is due to the interventions commissioned by the Amico family. In the eighteenth century the castle was transformed into an elegant baroque building thanks to the work of Benedetto Alfieri.

In Castell’Alfero in 1774 Giovan Battista De Rolandis was born, the creator of the Italian flag Tricolour. In 1808 Gianduja was born in Callianetto, the carnival mask symbol of Piedmont.

Castell'Alfero is a beautiful, relaxing place to visit and only an hour's drive from Turin!
