A Hidden Masterpiece - St Mary’s Church, Fountains Abbey

Today I visited St Mary’s Church within the grounds of Fountains Abbey, a place that feels slightly apart from the medieval world I usually explore, yet holds a quiet presence of its own.

Built in the 1870s and designed by William Burges, this isn’t a church shaped slowly by time, but something imagined and carefully brought into existence. Step inside and the difference is immediate, with light pouring through stained glass, casting colour across the stone in a way that feels controlled, deliberate, almost composed.

It’s not the worn, weathered history I’m normally drawn to, but there’s still something here. Something calm, something considered.

I also captured a few shots of the nearby Cloister House, built by the same architect, carrying that same sense of design and intent.

St Mary’s Church isn’t always open, and entry is included with Fountains Abbey or free for National Trust members.

Even if it’s not the period you’d usually choose… it’s worth stepping inside.
