This is the third of three solo acoustic pieces that influenced my style, sharpened my ears, and helped catalyze my love for the acoustic guitar. Composed by Derek Webb, on Caedmon's Call's fan club CDs "The Guild Collection" Volumes 1 and 2.

Tuning: DGDGAD (Capo 5)
When I discovered these songs, the compositional and technical style spoke to me so much that I had to learn them. Because there were no tabs or books to be found for these rare recordings, I challenged myself to learn them by ear. I spent weeks trying to fully discern, transcribe, practice, and memorize these, and many more months to learn their phrasing. I eventually learned to play many standard chord progressions in this tuning. The process was invaluable, and as a result, I learned to look at the guitar less as a matrix of fret numbers and strings (tab), and more as a set of strings with the frets representing pitch relationships (relative pitch); less as a strumming instrument, more as a nuanced, expressive tool for whatever ideas happen to be in my head. Learning these three songs was one of the best things that ever happened to me as a student of the guitar.
