So there is always the possibility that you can have a reaction so having a hypoallergenic metal is ideal to minimize that risk. Just so happens Platinum is the only true hypoallergenic metal that you can buy because its 95% pure. Gold on the other hand is made with a mix of metals. If you already know they have a reaction to gold then platinum is the clear winner. BUT if you go 18 karat gold then you minimize that risk even more.

2. Long term Care

Its true that at the time of purchase, these metals look the same, but that’s not true when discussing how they will look like in 5 years. White gold is beautiful and is often the standard in jewelry but does it age gracefully? It doesn’t not. A white gold piece is not pure gold. When white gold is made, yellow gold is mixed together with white metals such as nickel, silver, and palladium. Once the metals are mixed, a white gold piece will then be "rhodium plated”. This gives it the whiter shinier finish.
Over time, the rhodium will start to wear down and the gold natural yellow color will begin to show. The more active you are can accelerate this process. Now on the flip side, if you maintain the ring and polish it often, this will be a non issue. So you will have to maintain the ring to keep it white and shiny.
Platinum will age differently. Remember its 95% pure so it fades differently. It won’t turn yellow but will look more dull. Some claim to like that less bright look as it accentuates the diamonds brilliance but Im not to sure about that point. Some I suppose like a vintage look. This shine and luster can of course be brought to life by polishing.

3. Durability and life span.
Platinum is the most dense and hardest metal of the bunch. Oddly enough it scratches easier than gold. How can that be if toughed as the most durable? Think of it, like a piece of glass... it's easy to scratch, but it is hard to bend or break. Despite being stronger and more durable than gold, platinum can get scratched easily on the surface. Since its the most dense, platinum prongs can hold a center stone more securely.

Another point, when gold is scratched, the gold is stripped away and is lost.
When platinum is scratched, the platinum gets moved from one place on the ring to another, and it develops something called a patina finish. This type of finish will make your jewelry look like an antique. Platinum's metal can be moved back in place with polishing because it is not actually losing metal like white gold.

White gold is typically found in 14kt (58.3% pure gold).
Or 18kt which is 75% pure gold.
Gold will almost always be mixed with other metals so it strengthened the composition. A 24kt ring will be too soft and diamonds will be popping out. You don’t want that do you?
Platinum is very strong and twice the density of gold. Which will make it heavier. If you have a heavy designed ring, you will feel the weight difference so that must be a consideration.
5. PRICE

An obvious factor and the reason gold sells much more than platinum is the cost. Typically, platinum is priced higher than gold. Currently gold is up but historically platinum is more rare of a metal and mined less. The same ring will be priced more in platinum because its typically priced by weight. Since platinum is twice the density, it will be much heavier.
At the end of the day, budget is a massive factor. Many have a specific carat goal in mind. If you only have 1,000 left in the budget, gold maybe your best option.
