WE14 Opening Keynote with Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX

More than 40 years after the first man walked on the moon and captured the curiosity of a generation, the girls who listened to Neil Armstrong utter his famous words are the women leading the charge on a new frontier. WE 14, the largest annual conference for women engineers, featured an intimate conversation between SWE FY15 President Elizabeth Bierman and SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell. Shotwell joined SpaceX in 2002 as its seventh employee. Today, she manages the daily operations of a $5 billion company with 3,000 people on its payroll, all working towards the ultimate goal of facilitating life on other planets. As a child Bierman had drawn inspiration from her astronaut lunchbox to one day become an engineer. Today, she applies her extensive aerospace engineering experience in her role as a senior program manager for Honeywell Aerospace in Minneapolis. During this fireside chat, the pair discussed the state of women in engineering, the search for work-life balance, advice for tomorrow's women engineers and what working in the aerospace industry is really like behind the glamour of space travel.
