In 1972, an American show manager offered Haag a tour booking and she performed her show "Berlin Chanson" at Fire Island, in Long Island and Atlantic City. Here she met and fell in love with a street musician from Berlin and decided to move back to Europe to live in the German capital with him.[1]

The founding members were lead singer Marian Gold (real name: Hartwig Schierbaum, born 26 May 1954 in Herford, North Rhine-Westphalia), Bernhard Lloyd (real name: Bernhard Gößling, born 6 June 1960 in Enger, North Rhine-Westphalia), and Frank Mertens (real name: Frank Sorgatz, born 26 October 1961 in Enger, North Rhine-Westphalia). The band was at first named "Forever Young" before changing to "Alphaville". They are best known for the hit singles, "Big in Japan", "Sounds Like a Melody" and "Forever Young".
Hartwig Schierbaum (born 26 May 1954), better known by his stage name Marian Gold, is the lead singer of the German synthpop group Alphaville, and has also recorded as a solo artist.[1][2]
Born in Herford, West Germany, Gold became part of the Berlin art collective the Nelson Community, where he formed the band Chinchilla Green in the late 1970s, which also included future Alphaville colleague Bernhard Lloyd.[3] In 1982, he joined Lloyd and Frank Mertens in the band Forever Young, which soon became Alphaville.[3] His multi-octave tenor voice appears in Alphaville's 1980s pop singles, including "Forever Young", "Big in Japan", "Sounds Like a Melody", and "Dance with Me".
Since the early 1990s, Gold has taken Alphaville from a studio-based project to a successful live act and has established the band's website, Moonbase.
Gold's first solo album, So Long Celeste, was released in 1992.[4] Included on the album were cover versions of "The Shape of Things to Come" (originally by The Headboys) and "One Step Behind You" (by Furniture).
A second solo album, United, followed in 1996.

Marian Gold zog 1980 nach Münster und startete erste musikalische Versuche im siebenköpfigen Künstlerkollektiv „Nelson Community" (1981). 1982 gründete er zusammen mit Bernhard Lloyd und Frank Mertens das Pop-Trio „Forever Young", aus dem 1983 die Band Alphaville entstand (benannt nach dem gleichnamigen Film von Jean-Luc Godard).
Der jugendliche Synthie Pop des Trios war vor allem von der ausdrucksstarken, oft rührenden Stimme Marian Golds geprägt. Der Durchbruch kam 1984 gleich mit der ersten Single „Big in Japan", die zuerst in Deutschland, dann europaweit ein Top-10-Hit wurde. Sie war trotz der Folge-Hits „Sounds Like a Melody" und „Forever Young" der größte Erfolg von Alphaville. 1985 zog die Band nach Berlin.
Nach weiteren Alben und Multimedia-Projekten profilierte sich Marian Gold in den 1990er-Jahren als Solokünstler. 1992 erschien das Solo-Album „So Long, Celeste". 1996 folgte mit „United" das zweite, von Rupert Hine produzierte Soloalbum, das ein mäßiger kommerzieller Erfolg war.
Seit 1993 tritt Marian Gold unter dem Namen Alphaville auch live auf, was jedoch bis heute von den damaligen Bandmitgliedern Bernhard Lloyd, Frank Mertens und Ricky Echolette abgelehnt wird. Die Band veröffentlicht weiterhin Lieder, Alben und Remixe, die vornehmlich über das Internet vertrieben werden. Nach dem Ausstieg von Bernhard Lloyd im Jahr 2002 ist Gold das letzte verbliebene Alphaville-Gründungsmitglied.
Nebenher findet Gold immer noch Zeit für Soloprojekte: So trat er 2001 mit der Band „Sputnik Roadhouse" im Fernsehfilm „Klassentreffen" (Sat.1) auf und tourte 2002 mit der „Nokia Night Of The Proms" durch Deutschland. 2003 sang er den „Gesandten" in der Oper „L'invenzione Degli Angeli / Die Erfindung Der Engel" von Klaus Schulze und Hermann Schneider.
2005 nahm er im Duett mit dem hannoverschen DJ Kai Hawaii dessen Lied „Für Dich" auf, welches im Online-Computerspiel „Dark Age Of Camelot" enthalten ist.
Gold ist Vater von sechs Kindern, die von vier verschiedenen Müttern stammen.
