Ashley's Story - Adolescent Bariatric Surgery

17-year-old Ashley knew "something needed to be done" when the scale reached 235 lbs. and she was morbidly obese. Her weight held her back, but her mom was on a mission to find help. Ashley walked into the the Healthy Lifestyles Center with the mindset that she could do anything she put her mind to, but when she only lost .3 pounds during her 6-month lifestyle intervention, she knew bariatric (weight loss) surgery was the best option for her. She has since lost 84 pounds and sees her surgery as a tool in the healthy lifestyle tool box.

Bariatric surgery may be considered as an adjunct treatment option for older adolescents with severe obesity and significant weight-related medical conditions. Bariatric surgery is a weight loss tool and adolescents must make lifelong changes to be successful. Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU is the only accredited adolescent bariatric surgery center in Virginia, and one of several in the mid-atlantic region.
