Marking a Timber Sale

In this video I discuss how I go about marking a timber sale. In this case my landowner instructed me to mark a sale and get a good slug of cash without trashing the property. Since White oak is in demand under current market conditions, I am marking a lot of it to get the income the landowner needs and leaving less valuable scarlet and red oak in the stand so there are still some big trees.
We should be able to go back in 20 years and harvest more oak as I am leaving many good stems of mixed oak and maple in the 12- 14 inch dbh range.
Also, since pulpwood markets are good, I will mark some TSI trees to get rid of poorly formed trees and undesirable species.
This is about a 40 acre block of woods and I was able to sell the timber for $50,000 without doing much damage to the land value.
This stand had been harvested once before about 25 years ago and, as you can see, if done correctly, one can move into an oak stand every 30 years and make money every time.
Unfortunately, many oak stands are ruined by irresponsible foresters and loggers who over harvest and don't do any work to ensure regeneration and save quality small sawtimber for the future.
