Applying the TOGAF® Standard to Agile Development at Shell

Session will demonstrate how the TOGAF® framework has been adapted into an Agile approach to deliver Solution Architecture to multiple Agile teams in large scale (10 teams) software development at Shell. Around 200 Solution Architects at Shell have been retooled with a Repository-based design tool supporting ArchiMate®. In the first wave, called “MVP1”, a limited version with about 75% of the ArchiMate Meta Model was introduced. By selecting specific TOGAF Artifacts as mandatory and others as optional a greatest common denominator for Solution Architectures was also introduced. Indicating which TOGAF Artifacts were expected to be at least partially delivered for deciding what kind of delivery team needed to be onboarded, getting Agile teams in place could be accelerated. Finally all other TOGAF artifacts would be incrementally built together with the Agile team in the Scrum Ways of Working, producing just enough architecture just in time, or developing parts of the Solution collaboratively with the various teams in Refinements. The importance of differentiating between functional and non-functional requirements is illustrated.

Ben Heideveld studied Physics in Utrecht, Netherlands, and worked from 1991-1999 and 2006-2009 for Cap Gemini. In between Dr. Heideveld was VP for Enterprise Architecture at ABN AMRO Bank. Since 2009 Dr. Heideveld is an independent IT- and Business Architect. Dr. Heideveld is in his second year of returning to Shell, where he earlier set up Enterprise Architecture for Exploration and Production (2007-2008). Dr. Heideveld’s current engagement centers around a deep investment in TOGAF®-based Ways of Working using a Repository-based ArchiMate® design tool in an Agile development dominated environment. Having had experience of developing systems in an Agile way in the late 1990’s and working as a Solution Architect for Agile development and devops teams enabled Dr. Heideveld to accommodate the TOGAF Framework to Agile Ways of Working for Shell.
