Michael Bascom, scientist and scholar, considers himself superior to the local legends of ghosts haunting his ancestral home, Wildheath Grange. But when his elderly servants ask him to employ a new maid, he finds himself obliged to investigate.

Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835–1915) was an actress before turning to writing fiction. She was particularly associated with the "sensation novels" which were hugely popular in the mid-Victorian era, of which 'Lady Audley's Secret' (1862) is perhaps the outstanding example. It is the work for which she is best remembered today; it made her name and fortune, and has never been out of print. In addition, she also wrote a number of supernatural short stories, several of which are still regularly anthologised.

'The Shadow in the Corner' was first published in Temple Bar magazine in 1879.
