Essential Filters for Landscape Photography

I can see why, because they are lots of different types, each doing a different thing and it can be a little overwhelming if you are new to the world of filters.

So in an attempt to answer most of these questions, in this video I’m going to run through all the filters I use and what I use them for, and hopefully this information will help you when you are considering your next filter purchase.

I would consider a polarising filter a must for any landscape photographer. I’d use a Polariser in 95+% of the shots I take. Depending on how you’ve turned your polarizer, it will block some of the light coming towards you at certain orientations. Think of it as cleaning up the light that comes into the camera.

The effect is a polarizer will reduce the glare you get from wet surfaces. Instead of revealing more details of the wet rocks, more textures and stronger patterns in wet sand and better contrast in moving water.

Polariser can also help produce more vivid colours, particularly with blues or greens. A polarizer can also cut through the haze which is caused by light being scattered by the moisture and particles in the air, resulting in better contrast and detail.
