SGOT/SGPT High? Don’t Panic! | When Elevated Liver Enzymes Are Serious?#vigyansutra

GOT/SGPT Elevated? Don’t Panic.

A high SGOT (AST) or SGPT (ALT) level does not always mean serious liver disease.

These enzymes are normally present inside liver cells. When the liver is irritated or damaged, they leak into the bloodstream and their levels rise.

⚠️ If SGOT/SGPT levels are significantly elevated (around 200–500 or higher), along with symptoms such as:
• Jaundice (yellow eyes/skin)
• Loss of appetite
• Repeated vomiting
• Extreme fatigue
• Raised bilirubin

…it may indicate a more serious liver condition such as hepatitis, advanced fatty liver disease, or possible liver failure.

✅ Mild elevation (40–100) is much more common and is often linked to:
• Fatty liver
• Poor lifestyle habits
• Alcohol use
• Certain medications

The good news? In many cases, liver enzymes return to normal with proper diet, lifestyle changes, and timely care.

Don’t panic by looking at numbers alone.
