Bye Bye Birdie - The Telephone Hour

1958 America - getting pinned... It's a old rite of courtship , when a young man takes his school pin, of which he has great pride, and pins it to the sweater of the girl he adores. It signifies to others that she is in a relationship (and off limits).

From Bye Bye Birdier (1963) .
One of my favorite movie musicals - the handset and cord is so much part of this staging by Onna White. Who knew it would become a antiquated as getting pinned? Trudi Ames steals the scene as Ursula.

Song title is a play on the a popular TV show - "The Bell Telephone Hour" which ran on NBC from 1958 to 1968, the first series to be broadcast exclusively in color.
