Above the Altiplano (Andean Suite)
🏔️ A cross-cultural orchestral suite that fuses traditional Andean folk instruments — quena flute, zampoña panpipes, charango lute, bombo legüero drum — with a full Western symphony orchestra. 84 BPM in A minor pentatonic with the haunting breath of high-altitude wood flutes over warm string-section harmony. Andean orchestral, Andean classical fusion, world classical, contemplative cinematic, altiplano music, instrumental.
🦅 Above the Altiplano is a piece for a Bolivian or Peruvian highland at golden hour. The Andean condor is wheeling slowly over the snow-capped peaks. A village of stone houses sits at four thousand meters above the sea, smoke rising from chimneys, llamas grazing on the high pampa, the wind cool and dry and full of the smell of altitude. A quena player begins the melody alone — that haunting, breathy, pentatonic line that has carried across the Andes for millennia — and the orchestra joins underneath, warm strings holding sustained chords, the charango shimmering in the middle distance, the bombo legüero pulsing like a slow Andean heartbeat. This is the meeting place of an indigenous musical tradition and the symphonic European concert tradition — two musical languages standing in the same mountain wind.
🎻 Production: A minor pentatonic, 84 BPM, 4/4 with a swung lilting Andean folk-dance feel, instrumental. Andean ensemble: a lead quena (Andean notched-end bamboo flute) with breathy raspy timbre playing the haunting pentatonic melody, a zampoña (panpipe) doubling at the octave and providing counter-lines, a charango (high-pitched 10-string Andean lute) on rasgueado strumming, a bombo legüero (deep wooden kick drum) with a heartbeat pulse, subtle hand-percussion. Western orchestra: full string section (first/second violins, violas, cellos, basses) with warm sustained chords; french horns providing chord wash on the choruses; a single oboe doubling the quena at cadences; a harp arpeggiating under the bridge. Structure: solo-quena intro, charango at bar nine, bombo at bar seventeen, strings open at forty-five seconds, zampoña doubles at one-minute, violins join in close-thirds at one-twenty, harp-and-strings middle section at one-fifty, triumphant restatement at two-fifteen, fade with solo quena and a sustained low cello. Mix: warm concert-hall reverb, Andean ensemble close and present, orchestra wide behind, round bombo, bright breathy quena.
🌄 Visuals: The Bolivian and Peruvian altiplano at golden hour and twilight. A Quechua musician in a colorful woven poncho playing the quena before snow-capped Andean peaks. A wide view of the altiplano with a stone village and grazing llamas. A close-up of the quena and zampoña on a woven textile. An Andean condor soaring against the peaks. A Western orchestra performing on an open-air stage on the altiplano. A young Quechua woman in a manta and bowler hat on a stone wall. A close-up of the charango. A wide twilight view of the altiplano with the first stars and a single distant oil lamp.
