Bridges along the former Soo Line main in Minnesota Fall 2021
In this video, we cover 3 iconic bridges in Minnesota along the former Soo Line main in fall of 2021.
Beginning in the small town of Rockford, we are at the Crow River where a trestle towers high above, at a picture perfect spot. This bridge was built in 1907, standing 60 ft above the river, and sees several trains daily.
In the 2nd clip, we are in Camden in Minneapolis, where a bridge over the Mississippi River signifies the end of barge traffic on the river. This bridge was built in 1905, and rebuilt in 1977 where the center span was raised to allow higher clearance. This bridge also sees several different movements a day.
Both the Rockford and Minneapolis bridges are now operated on by Canadian Pacific, as part of their Paynesville Subdivision, part of the American mainline from Chicago, IL to Moose Jaw, SK.
The third and final clip, we take a trip to the Wisconsin border to view the magnificent Arcola high bridge, where we view a rare daylight train crossing over. The ladder bridge is arguably the most significant, however only sees 2 trains daily, and unfortunately mostly at night. However, if you're lucky and the train is delayed, it is a sight to behold. This bridge was built in 1911, towering almost 200 ft in the air and a half mile long, it is now served by the Canadian National, part of its Minneapolis Subdivision.
Although the Minneapolis Sub sees little traffic, it still plays an important role for the connection point to the twin cities, branching off from the CN mainline in Owen, WI.
All of these bridges were built by the Soo Line in early 20th century, and are still used 100 years in the future, proving they were built to last, and serve as architectural feats of a time gone by.
