The second important event happened in Sinai is the corruption of golden calf. Exodus 24:18 claims that Moses spend 40 days and night with God. And the absence of Moses lead people to develop impatience. Exodus 32:1 reflect on this impatience of people and they report about it to Aaron. The people claims that Moses who brought us out of Egypt is absent. They are giving the credit of rescuing from Egypt to Moses and not recognizing God as the author of liberation. In the absence of Moses they need god. why? In past they accepted what Moses told them but now they recognized the God is concerned about the covenant laws and it is difficult to follow therefor they asked for other god. They are rejecting the first two clause of ten commandment plus other instruction giving in Exo. 20:23; 23:13, 24.

Aaron asked for their gold for this purpose and when they fashioned golden calf from the gold. The Hebrew translation is young bull not calf. Aaron might have the image of Apis god of Egypt as bull is sign of power and fertility.

Aaron also announces that they will have festival for this god. Ps. 106: 19-21 claims that they exchanged the glory of God for bull which eats grass. In Acts 7:39 Stephen claims that their heart turned back to Egypt.

Lord responded to this crisis by instructing Moses to go down (Exo. 32:7) to the people because they are stiff neck (Exo. 32:9). God also suggest that God will punish them and make a great nation out of Moses. People claimed that Moses brought them out of Egypt and thus now God want to make a nation out of Moses.

In response to this Moses sought favor from the Lord (v. 11) and reminded God about covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Israel. Moses accepted the greatness of Patriarch's and claims that he is nothing in front of them. This proves the humbleness of Moses.

Moses and Joshua comes down and on the way they hear the sound and Joshua think that this is war. For people this is celebration but for others it seems like war. What a wonderful form of worship? Moses says that this is not sound of victory nor defeat that means this is sound of confusion. V. 25 claims that people are running wild and out of control. The God of Bible is God who likes things in control or things when they are systematic.

Moses out of anger broke the tablets and he burns the golden bull and powers it and give people to drink.Due to idol worship they lost the blessing which they got from Egypt. The gold and silver were like retirement fund for the people but they lost it.

Moses also gives a alter call ,"whoever is for the Lord, come to me" and Levies responded and Moses ask them to punish the people and that day 3000 people died.

Moses again goes to the Lord (v. 30) and he gets God revelation and he experience the glory of God (Exo. 33:19), the covenant gets renewed (Exo. 34:10-28), and Moses leadership gets re-established (Exo. 34:29-chp. 35). Let us learn from this historical event and we should reject every idol but visible and invisible.
