Sheikh Hasina News: Sheikh Hasina Faces Crimes Against Humanity Charges Over 2024 Protest Crackdown

Bangladesh ex-PM Sheikh Hasina has been charged with crimes against humanity over her role in suppressing the 2024 student-led uprising. Prosecutors allege she directly ordered security forces and affiliated groups to carry out violent crackdowns that led to mass casualties. Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam said the killings were planned, citing video and encrypted chats as evidence. Hasina is also accused of holding command responsibility as the head of government. The protests began over job quotas but grew into a mass uprising against corruption and authoritarian rule. Facing mounting pressure, Hasina resigned on August 5, 2024, and fled to India, where she remains. The charges were presented during a televised hearing at Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal.
