I developed insomnia in my thirties, after having children. Due to my difficulties with getting to sleep and staying asleep, I began to associate sleep time with anxiety.
There are different severity levels of insomnia and sleep anxiety. You may be surprised to learn that some difficulties with insomnia can be relieved by applying basic Sleep Hygiene. Yes! There is sleep hygiene, and sadly, it is often completely ignored by many. In this video, (part one of a two part video), I detail what is required for healthy sleep hygiene. In part two, I address what to do for insomnia and sleep anxiety when basic sleep hygiene is not enough.
But let's be honest, there are so many distractions these days, that it can be really challenging to follow our natural sleep instincts.

Imagine this scene:
It's summer, the days are long. The sun peers through your window, waking you from a long, restful sleep. You eat a warm breakfast and then work most of the day, manual labor, in the sun. After a long day, you're relieved to have some rest and relaxation, but here's the catch; you don't turn on the tv. You don't open your phone. You stay completely in the moment with friends or family, a large meal over a big table, sharing stories and laughing.
By the time the sun starts to set you are happy to lay in bed and close your eyes. Free from social media, mobile games, and late night talk shows.
This is how our bodies are meant to wake up and fall asleep. Of course, very few of our lives will follow this pattern, maybe none of them. But the closer we can get to the natural rhythm and flow of life, the better we will naturally wake up and fall asleep.
