GravityMark Graphics Card Benchmark
Today we are going to be taking a look at a brand new benchmarking tool that specifically tests only your graphics card. GravityMark is a cross platform benchmark from Tellusim. This benchmark tool as mentioned tries to completely eliminate the CPU from the equation in terms of performance testing and even makes mention of older graphics cards like the GTX 1060 performing well. I thought I would take a look at what I could do with the GTX 1060 in my older gaming laptop. We’ll run through a few runs stock and overclocked.
This benchmark has several customizations that you can configure to test the graphics card in different ways. The tool supports multiple screen resolutions, APIs and also multiple operating systems. Today I’ll be going through mainly two different benchmarks, 1080p and 1440p with the default 200 asteroid count. As we go through the benchmark run, it's interesting to look at the clock speeds of the graphics card. The core clock is a bit higher than it normally is during 3dmark or other gaming benchmarks. This is mostly because of the design of the benchmark tool to specifically use the graphics card only for the heavy lifting. Without the CPU really creating much heat or using very much energy, there's enough headroom for the graphics card to be able to reach its full boost clocks. During a 3dmark run for example after about 3 minutes in, the core clock would normally have dropped into the high 1600s or low 1700s by now. It’s hard for me to say yet what a good score for any specific test for any specific gpu is but totally stock my 3gb 1060m scored 4,964 points.
I was curious about the higher screen resolution tests and how they would fare on a GTX 1060 3gb model graphics card. I was able to get the 1440p test to load but not the 4k test. I’m not sure if that's a bug of the GTX 1060 3gb model just can't load the benchmark. As expected, the performance is a bit lower at the higher 1440p resolution but the graphics cards core clock is still a lot higher than in gaming scenarios.
For fun, I reran the benchmark with my normal gaming overclock, roughly 2000-2050mhz core clock and 9000mhz on the memory. It’s interesting to see a benchmarking tool that does not take into account the rest of the system but does stress the graphics card.
