AI Is Shrinking Your Brain — Unless You Do This | SXSW 2026 Full Panel
AI is not your biggest risk. Your relationship to AI is.
At SXSW 2026, I moderated "Brains & Bots: Evolving the Future of
Intelligence Together" — a panel on the Tech & AI Track (Sponsored by IBM)
that asked the question most organizations are avoiding: what is AI actually
doing to human intelligence?
Joined by cognitive neuroscientist Dr. Heather Collins, futurist and CEO
Neil Redding, and AI educator Dan Chuparkoff, we went deep on the science,
the strategy, and the stakes.
What we covered:
→ Cognitive debt: MIT Media Lab EEG research on 54 people found ChatGPT
users had the lowest brain engagement across all 32 regions — and couldn't
recover after the tool was removed
→ The Microsoft + Carnegie Mellon finding: higher AI confidence = less
critical thinking. The variable isn't the tool. It's your relationship to it.
→ Adaptive intelligence: how human neural networks and machine learning
loops co-evolve — and what that means for how you lead, decide, and grow
→ Agentic AI: the shift from AI you use to AI that acts — and why most
organizations don't have the trust infrastructure to handle it
→ The three human superpowers AI cannot replicate: meaning-making,
emotional context, and judgment under uncertainty
→ My A.C.T. Framework™ — Awareness, Calibration, Trust infrastructure —
and why Calibration is where cognitive atrophy either happens or doesn't
→ What should never be automated, even when the model is highly accurate
The organizations that win in the AI era won't have the best models.
They'll have the most trust — in their people, their systems, their leaders.
That trust is not a soft skill. It is your hardest infrastructure problem.
