Are horror games not scary anymore? Or have we grown up?
I think this is a question many of you have asked yourselves if you're avid horror game enjoyers. Maybe horror games are not scary anymore, or maybe we have grown up, and consequently, we feel less frightened by fictional things as the years go by.
Anyhow, I felt like doing this video because horror is one of my favorite gaming genres next to RPGs. My first PS2 games were The Simpsons Hit and Run (classic), Area 51, Resident Evil 4, and Call of Duty 3. Out of these, 2 stood out for me, and those were the spooky ones, and right then and there I knew this genre was going to deliver me some incredible times in the future.
It did provide me many incredible moments, but also huge disappointments, namely Resident Evil 6. That moment in time when the horror market started to be plagued by action was hell for me because I wasn't looking for explosions, derailings, or avalanches, amongst others, I wanted survival horror, and good lord was I pleased when Resident Evil 7 was announced.
Unfortunately, as pleased as I am because horror is coming back to its place, there are still many bad practices that I have named in this video, that developers still do nowadays. Jumpscares without a nice build-up, lack of good soundtracks, uninspiring ambiance... and the list goes on.
I hope that someday (the day Kojima drops his new horror game) those things will get fixed. We need a new standard for real (survival) horror games. It seems the only companies in this genre who perform well are indies because they lack the resources and the budget so they focus on giving us an interesting psychological experience, unlike AAA companies, who seem to focus on making the games shiny, period.
At any rate, thank you for watching. I'll leave some time stamps here.
