I did not want to leave the Basque Country without first visiting its capital, Vitoria-Gazteiz. It was worth a visit to the city where the headquarters of the Basque Government is located that welcomes us on a beautiful spring day showing us the true charm of a Green Capital.

Created at the end of the 12th century, Vitoria-Gasteiz has an exemplary urban design. Vitoria-Gasteiz has a Historic Quarter, declared a Monumental Complex in 1997, which preserves its medieval layout intact. 3 Europa Nostra awards endorse the work carried out in the rehabilitation and recovery of emblematic spaces and buildings of the Medieval Almond.

At one end of the medieval Almond stands the Cathedral of Santa María, also called the Old Cathedral. Built in the High Middle Ages on the foundations of a Romanesque temple, the Old Cathedral is the only Gothic temple of its kind in the Basque Country and it had structural problems almost from its construction. For this reason, for more than fifteen years it has been immersed in a complex restoration process. This has not prevented the cathedral from remaining ‘open for works’ so that locals and strangers can discover the foundations of a Gothic cathedral or the recesses of the vaults. The novelist Ken Follet documented himself on the spot to write the sequel to the successful "The Pillars of the Earth."

Declared European Green Capital in 2012 Vitoria-Gasteiz is also one of the European cities with the largest area of green and landscaped spaces per person (about 42 square meters per inhabitant if we include the current extension of the Green Belt). In the Basque capital you have more than ten million square meters of parks and green areas to walk, ride a bike, observe birds and deer or go horseback riding.

If what you like is modern art, you cannot miss the Artium Museum, which contains one of the most important collections of contemporary Basque and Spanish art.
