This majestic hymn celebrates Christ's sovereignty through vivid royal imagery and biblical allusions. Originally written as a response to Catholic-Protestant tensions, it evolved through collaborative authorship to become a beloved ecumenical hymn. The text draws from Revelation 19:12 and combines themes of Christ's incarnation, resurrection, and eternal reign.

First published in Bridges' "Hymns of the Heart" (1851), with Thring adding verses in 1874. The tune DIADEMATA, composed by George J. Elvey, perfectly matches the text's regal character.
