I was naive and thought the US legal system was fair; it is not. For some strange reason, many lawyers and judges resent their fellow citizens exercising their right to represent themselves in court proceedings (pro se/self represented/pro per). This arrogant view often results in rampant attorney misconduct and anti-pro se bias by the judge. I never thought officers of the court (judges and attorneys) would be the biggest obstacle to justice, but sometimes they are. “people without lawyers are mistreated by the legal system.” Judge Richard A. Posner (retired 7th Circuit US Court of Appeals & most cited US legal scholar).
This is why I began pro se prep – to help prepare other self represented litigants for the challenge that lies ahead by providing general resources and sharing my experiences (it is not legal advice; please contact an attorney if you seek legal advice). If you do not have the time to research laws and rules, it will be a challenge. I was comfortable with the required legal research because I have a bachelors of business administration and worked in corporate, nonprofit, and small business environments. Even so, our legal system has still been a challenge because it treats pro se litigants unfairly. I hope ProSePrep.com’s free listing of resources and videos helps you find useful information for your case.
I wish you and all pro se litigants the best of luck in the pursuit of justice.
