Tokyo's Most Famous Street Food Lane: TEMPURA UDON Noodles from the "Piss Alley"
[ NO TALKING. JUST FOOD. ]
Shinjuku's Piss Alley (aka Memory Lane, or Omoide Yokocho in Japanese) is a tiny alleyway crammed with equally tiny yakitori restaurants and other little street food joints. Though this historical side street is always packed with tourists trying to get Instagram shots of its picturesque Showa era vibes, it's definitely a unique place that deserves a walk through. And my favorite noodle shop in Shinjuku is located there! Kameya serves up cheap and simple bowls of tempura soba and udon in their own "tentama" style and is a great place when you need a fast, no-frills bite (that's also incredibly delicious).
🍜On slurping noodles in Japan: While eating noisily is considered rude in Japan, loudly slurping noodles is the norm. Non-Japanese may find it strange... but when in Rome, as they say. I personally agree with the idea that slurping improves the taste of noodle soups. I also find it's the most efficient away to eat those dishes because it allows you to quickly take the noodles into your mouth while they're still piping hot. I've noticed that sometimes less experienced noodle eaters will spend a lot of time struggling to suck up a couple noodles or nibbling them into their mouths, letting everything get cold.
Check out this guide from the Japan Times on how to properly slurp noodles. There is a technique! http://bit.ly/2yo8dG0
