The Kerry Polkas - Sharon Shannon & Friends, 1992
Fellow artists and friends join Sharon Shannon for the finale to a show acknowledging her contribution to Irish music.
A special episode of ‘The Late Late Show’ paying tribute to musician Sharon Shannon from Ruan near Corafin in County Clare. It is not unusual for the programme to pay tribute to a musician but it is rare to do so to one so young.
Sharon Shannon is part of an extraordinary explosion of musical talent to come on the scene in Ireland over the last 10 to 15 years. As a musician she has managed to fuse together Irish traditional music with outside influences and has toured, recorded and performed with some of the biggest names in music. Many of those musicians pay tribute to her.
Contributions on the night came from Elearnor McEvoy, Mary Black, Frances Black, Kieran Goss, James Blennerhassett, Dónal Lunny, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Adam Clayton, Dolores Keane, Mike Scott, Maura O’Connell, Mary Custy, Eoin O’Neill, Máiréad Nesbitt, Máire Brethnach, Noel Bridgeman, Trevor Hutchinson, Philip King, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Nollaig Casey, Mary Shannon, Gery O’Beirne, Garry Shannon, IJ Shannon and Mary Shannon, Steve Cooney, Seamus Begley, John The Lep Lynch, Brendan Begley, Majella Shannon, Frank Custy, Jerry Lombard, PJ Curtis, Pat Pidgeon and Denis Rafter.
The final performance saw everybody join with Sharon Shannon to play and dance to ‘The Kerry Polkas’.
This episode of The Late Late Show was broadcast on 18 December 1992. The presenter is Gay Byrne.
‘The Late Late Show’ was intended to be a summer filler, but proved so successful with the public that it became part of the regular schedule. The idea for the programme came from the show’s producer, Tom McGrath, who wanted to present an Irish version of the American talk show ‘The Tonight Show’.
Gay Byrne was to be the show’s presenter and would remain so for the next thirty-seven years. Tom McGrath’s original idea was that the show would be informal and have the feel of people dropping in for a chat.
‘The Late Late Show’ became an important forum for the airing and debating of many issues in a changing Irish society.
The first episode of ‘The Late Late Show’ was broadcast at 11.20 pm on 6 July 1962.
