Living with a Steam Machine.
In this video, I share my first impressions of Valve’s new $1,049 Steam Machine console hybrid, evaluating its out-of-the-box experience, physical build quality, and initial performance.
First, I establish the context behind my gaming setup. My background with PC gaming began with my first custom build back in 2016, followed by a series of component upgrades over the years. I map out my eventual migration to the Steam Deck, explaining why a handheld format fit my preferences. As a gamer who does not prioritize 4K max-settings performance, the Steam Deck’s focus on ecosystem flexibility over raw resolution was a major benefit. I discuss why the new desktop Steam Machine appeared to be a logical extension of that setup, despite a difficult economic climate and high component costs that make it a challenging hardware sell for many consumers.
Second, I perform a direct hardware unboxing and share my initial tactile impressions of the physical units. This includes a teardown of the physical dimensions and weight of the main console cube, alongside a functional evaluation of the updated Steam Controller’s ergonomics, button layouts, and material feel.
Third, I walk through the actual setup process and interface configuration inside an entertainment center. I detail the rear I/O connectivity, the initial software onboarding sequence via SteamOS, and the general responsiveness of the system when syncing an existing game library.
Finally, I present real-world performance data and frame rate stability metrics across five specific games from my library: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Rocket League, Forza Horizon 6, Elden Ring, and Red Dead Redemption 2. I conclude the video by identifying early software bugs, and navigation errors observed during this first week of real-world implementation.
