The Pirate Heist That Nearly Started a War

In 1695, one pirate pulled off the largest robbery in pirate history.

His name was Henry Every, and his attack on the Mughal treasure ship Ganj-i-Sawai shocked the world.

The ship belonged to merchants and nobles of the powerful Mughal Empire, ruled by Emperor Aurangzeb. The treasure aboard was worth hundreds of thousands of pounds — possibly hundreds of millions of dollars today.

The attack created a massive diplomatic crisis with the British East India Company, and triggered one of the first international manhunts in history.

Governments across Europe and the American colonies began searching for the pirate captain and his crew.

Some were captured. Some were executed.

But Henry Every himself disappeared without a trace.

Did he retire with his fortune?
Was he betrayed and robbed?
Or did the most successful pirate in history vanish forever?
