CHRIST, THE FOUNDATION: 1 Corinthians 3:10-11

Doctrine: Christ is the only sure foundation of eternal life as well as this earthly life.

I. CHRIST IS THE ONLY SURE FOUNDATION OF ETERNAL LIFE (v. 10b. 11)

1 Corinthians 3:10b “…like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation. . . 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

I) God has made Christ the foundation of eternal life (1 Peter 2:6)

1 Peter 2:6 (Isaiah 28) “For it stands in Scripture: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’”

II) Outside of Christ, you have no foundation, and your foot will slip in due time (Deuteronomy 32:35)

Deuteronomy 32:35 “To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; Their foot shall slide in due time: For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things that shall come upon them make haste.” (KJV)

III) A true Christian is one who has Christ as their foundation for eternal life (1 Peter 2:6, Psalm 40:2)

1 Peter 2:6 (Isaiah 28) “For it stands in Scripture: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’”

Psalm 40:2 “He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.”

IV) A faithful pastor is one who makes Christ the foundation of all his ministry (2 Corinthians 4:5; Acts 4:11-12)

2 Corinthians 4:5 “For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.”

Acts 4:11-12 “11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

II. CHRIST IS THE ONLY SURE FOUNDATION OF THIS EARTHLY LIFE (v. 10c)

1 Corinthians 3:10c “and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it.”

I) God has made Christ not only the foundation of eternal life, but also the foundation of this earthly life (Acts 2:36, Colossians 1:17-18)

Acts 2:36 “Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

Colossians 1:17-18 “17 [Jesus] is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything [Christ] might be preeminent.”

II) A faithful pastor is one who seeks to build up Christ’s church Christ’s way (Matthew 16:18, Mark 12:9)

Matthew 16:18 “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Mark 12:9 “What will the owner of the vineyard do? (with those who rejected Him and His son?) He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others.”

III) Outside of Christ, your life is built on sinking sand (Matthew 7:26-27)

Matthew 7:26-27 “26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

IV) A faithful Christian is one who seeks to build up every aspect of their life Christ’s way (Matthew 7:26-27)

Matthew 7:24-25 “24 Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”

(I) If you say your faith is in Christ but your life is more like an actor or a pagan, you profane the name of Christ. If you do not have the correct building, you bring much dishonor upon the foundation.

(II) But you saints who strive to build your life Christ’s way, according to His written Word, you build on a sure foundation, even Christ; you have God as your Father; and you have the Holy Spirit who will sustain you.

The rains of persecution will fall on you, but you will stand and rejoice. The floods of sadness will come, but you will not be washed away in despair. The winds of affliction will blow and beat upon you, but you will not fall, because you have been founded on the rock.
