West Bengal 2026 election phase 1 analysis | bengal election record polling | who will win?
West Bengal 2026 Assembly Election Phase 1 Analysis | Record-Breaking Turnout | Who Will Win?
Phase 1 polling for West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 concluded on 23 April across 152 constituencies (mainly North Bengal, Jangalmahal, Malda-Murshidabad pockets) with a historic 92.88% voter turnout — the highest in the state since Independence. Over 3.6 crore voters participated, smashing the previous record of ~84.7% from 2011.7a3653
Key Highlights:
Turnout crossed 90% in most seats; Dakshin Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, and several Murshidabad seats hit 95-96%+.
Despite Special Intensive Revision deleting lakhs of names, participation remained massive.
Isolated violence reported in Murshidabad and a few other areas, but polling largely peaceful.
Political Implications:
These seats were BJP strongholds in 2021 (they won ~59 here). High turnout in North Bengal and tribal Jangalmahal belts is being seen as a potential boost for BJP’s “Poriborton” narrative.
BJP’s Claim: Record polling signals massive anti-incumbency and a wave for change. PM Modi and Suvendu Adhikari called it a “tsunami” for BJP.
TMC’s Claim: Mamata Banerjee says people voted to protect their rights and welfare schemes despite deletions — early signs of TMC win.
Critical Seats: Nandigram (Suvendu Adhikari vs TMC), Siliguri, Cooch Behar, Malda pockets, and Jangalmahal tribal areas.
Current Scenario & Prediction:
Pre-poll surveys still give TMC an edge for overall majority (150-180 seats projected), as Phase 2 (29 April) covers their South Bengal strongholds. But a strong BJP performance in Phase 1 (70+ seats) could make the contest extremely tight. Final results on 4 May 2026.
This record turnout has made the 2026 Bengal battle even more intense. Will we see a change of guard or TMC’s fourth term? Phase 2 will decide the momentum.
