Life after lockdown - law in the time of COVID-19

Join UTS Law academics, Professor Thalia Anthony, Dr David Carter and Dr Elyse Methven as we explore how COVID-19 has impacted the law - and our everyday lives.

The declaration of a COVID-19 pandemic and a national state of emergency allowed Federal, State and Local Governments to exercise extra-ordinary powers: closing down our borders, businesses, parks and beaches and severely restricting the movement of individuals – mandating where we can go and who we can see. Policing and surveillance have been ramped up and there are hefty fines and even prison sentences for those who disobey.

For the most part, Australians have been compliant but what happens once social distancing rules are relaxed? How can we be sure all these restrictions will be wound back? Having given the police and other authorities extra powers, how easy will it be to remove them?
