Takht Rostam

Takht-e Rostam, also known as the Stupa of Takht-e Rostam, is a Buddhist monastery complex located two kilometers south of Haibak, in Afghanistan. Built-in the 3rd-4th centuries AD while the area was part of the Kushano-Sasanian Kingdom, the complex is carved totally from bedrock and "consists of five chambers, two of which are sacred. One of them features a domed roof with intricate lotus leaf decorations. The stupa is located on a neighboring hill and is topped by a harmonica, with several smaller caverns surrounding the base. A trove of Ghaznavid coins was discovered by coincidence in one of the caverns. Following the Muslim conquest of Afghanistan, the monastery's original purpose was lost. Instead, the place was absorbed into Persian mythology through the story of Rostam and Sohrab, which appears in Ferdowsi's 10th-century Persian epic “Shahnameh”. According to the narrative, Rostam traveled to the Kingdom of Samangan and spent time with the king at Takht-e Rostam. In 2021, the Afghan government refurbished the site and built a tourism hall

Attempts to find treasure and artifacts have been made since the 18th century. Theories about the island's artifacts range from pirate treasure to Shakespearean manuscripts to the Holy Grail or the Ark of the Covenant, with the Grail and the Ark being buried there by the Knights Templar. Various items discovered on the island have surfaced over the years, some of which have been carbon-dated and discovered to be hundreds of years old. Although these items are treasured in and of themselves, no significant main treasure site has ever been discovered.
