2005 VW Passat 1.8T automatic transmission leak cause / ZF 5HP-19 transmission pump bushing

I recently had to fix a leak on my 2005 Passat 1.8T automatic transmission. It turned out to be caused by the bushing on the transmission pump being loose. I decided to replace the whole transmission pump.

In this video, I compare the old and new transmission pumps.

The torque converter also needs to be replaced as the bad bushing / sleeve often wears it down or scores it around the shaft.

UPDATE: FYI, the pump assembly replacement job was done with the transmission on the car. I decided to take out the engine because I didn't want to deal with lifting up a heavy transmission from under the car or loosening the front subframe.

I also had to literally tow the old torque converter out of the old pump. It was stuck on real good. I used a couple of seat belts, wound it round the torque converter and attached the other end to the back of a friend's Volvo!

The car has been all good since then.
