Originally broadcast on July 31, 1947, "Mortmain" is a superbly crafted episode of Suspense, featuring a dark tale of betrayal, ambition, and the corrosive effects of guilt. This compelling psychological drama showcases everything that made Suspense one of the most acclaimed anthology series of the Golden Age of Radio.

The title "Mortmain," a legal term referring to property held indefinitely or "the dead hand," serves as a fitting metaphor for a story in which past actions continue to exert a powerful and destructive influence over the present.

Synopsis

Attorney Sam Boston appears to be a loyal friend and capable defense lawyer when his law partner, George Perry, stands accused of bribing a juror. Throughout the trial, Sam presents himself as a devoted advocate fighting tirelessly to save his friend from conviction.

In reality, however, Sam has carefully orchestrated George's downfall.

Driven by personal ambition, Sam deliberately sabotages the defense in order to remove his rival, inherit his political opportunities, and win the affection of George's fiancée, Alice. At first, the scheme appears to work perfectly. George is convicted, Sam achieves professional success, and Alice gradually enters his life.

Yet guilt proves impossible to escape.

As Sam's conscience begins to torment him, paranoia and emotional strain steadily consume him. The very success he desired becomes the source of unbearable anxiety as the weight of his betrayal threatens to destroy everything he has gained.

"Mortmain" is a remarkable study of conscience and moral corruption, demonstrating how ambition and selfishness can ultimately become self-destructive forces.
