Why Iraqi Soldiers Feared the AC-130 More Than the B-52

Iraqi soldiers called the AC-130 Spectre the "Angel of Death." When its 105mm howitzer, 40mm Bofors cannon, and 25mm Gatling guns began firing from orbit at 15,000 feet, the ground below turned into a kill zone with no escape. During Desert Storm, AC-130H gunships from the 16th Special Operations Squadron destroyed armored columns, truck convoys, and defensive positions with a precision that no other platform could replicate at night. Iraqi units learned to listen for the distinctive engine drone of the four Allison T56 turboprops - because once they heard it, the shooting had already started.

This documentary examines the AC-130's evolution from the improvised Vietnam-era gunship experiments - where C-47s and C-119s proved that a fixed-wing aircraft circling overhead with side-firing weapons could devastate ground targets - through the Spectre's devastating deployment along the Ho Chi Minh Trail and its combat record in Grenada, Panama, and the Gulf War. Featuring Iraqi Perspectives Project field reports, AC-130 crew testimony, and the engineering of a weapons platform that turned a cargo plane into the most feared aircraft in the night sky.
