Ted Golden Red Ribbon Week Celebration

“IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD”

THE WAR ON DRUGS CONTINUES WHILE CHILDREN AND TEENS STRUGGLE TO FLOURISH IN TODAY’S WORLD

We honorably celebrate National Red Ribbon Week in commemoration of the ultimate sacrifice made by Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. In 1985, Camarena—former Calexico police office, former U.S. Marine, and DEA Special Agent—was a Mexican-American undercover agent on assignment in Mexico. Brazenly abducted in broad daylight while going to meet his wife for lunch, he was tortured after the abduction and eventually killed at the hands of drug traffickers. In 1985, he died fighting the battle against illegal drugs and fighting for the safety of children and our country.

The death of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena angered parents and youth in communities across the country; and as a result, they began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness about the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America.

In 1988, National Red Ribbon Week sponsored the first celebration that educated youth about drug prevention and awareness. Today, we continually encourage active community participation in all drug prevention activities.
