Do you know the most important skill for a basketball player? It's not speed, not jumping ability, not how many moves you have in your bag. It's what I call cerebral tracking.
This is different from vision. Vision is about what's directly in front of you. Cerebral tracking is knowing where everybody is on the floor, past, present, and future, on any given possession. If you're driving up the floor and you can see three of your teammates, that's just direct vision. It's the other two players behind the play that actually matter more.
In this breakdown I show what that looks like at the NBA level. Nikola Jokic gets the ball with no one open in front of him, but he already knows he can manipulate the defense to spring his trailer. He slows down, sells a pass one direction, then delivers a perfect pass the other way for the bucket. His head is already planning the next read before he even has the ball. Luka Doncic runs this same process at an elite level too.
This is one of the hardest things to teach a player, but once it clicks, it changes your game forever.
If you or a player you coach wants to actually train this skill, DM me and let's talk.
