One of the standout features of the new BMW 5 Series Touring is its flexible drive architecture. This allows for the production of models with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrid systems, and purely electric drive systems on a single production line at BMW Group's Dingolfing plant. The market launch begins in May 2024 in Germany, many other European countries, and Japan, with additional markets following in June 2024.

The BMW i5 Touring is available in two variants from launch. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring features two drive units forming an electric all-wheel drive with up to 442 kW (601 hp) and 820 Nm torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring has a rear axle electric motor producing 250 kW (340 hp) and 430 Nm torque, with 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 6.1 seconds. Both models feature a high-voltage battery with 81.2 kWh usable energy content, offering a range of 445 to 560 kilometers (277 to 348 miles) depending on the model.
