Shirley Bassey - Where Am I Going? (1972 Talk Of The Town)
REMASTERED CLIP - Shirley Bassey performed at the Talk of The Town several times during the 1960s and 1970s. This particular concert was held in 1972, and the footage and sound is of better quality. This particular concert was held in 1972. This is her opening number, called 'Where Am I Going?'.
ABOUT THIS SONG:
This song was written for the musical, 'Sweet Charity'. The music and Lyrics were written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields. Another big number from this musical that Shirley has included in her concert line-up for 6+ decades is 'Big Spender'. The musical was directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse, and it's based on the book written by Neil Simon. It is based on the screenplay for the 1957 Italian film Nights of Cabiria. However, whereas Federico Fellini's black-and-white film concerns the romantic ups-and-downs of an ever-hopeful prostitute, in the musical the central character is a dancer-for-hire at a Times Square dance hall. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it was nominated for nine Tony Awards, winning the Tony Award for Best Choreography. The production also ran in the West End as well as having revivals and international productions.
LYRICS: (As performed by Shirley)
Where am I going? And what will I find?
What's in this grab bag that I call my mind?
What am I doing alone on the shelf?
Ain't it a shame but no one's to blame
But myself
Which way is clear?
When you've lost your way, year after year
Do I keep falling in love for just the kick of it
Staggering through the thin and thick of it
Hating each old and tired trick of it
Know what I am, I'm good and sick of it
Where am I going? Why do I care?
Run through the grounds of Washington Square
No matter where I run, I meet myself there
Looking inside me, what do I see?
Anger and hope and doubt
What am I all about?
Where am I going?
