Centre Gives J&K LG Telecom Control Powers During Security Emergencies | NewsX

The Central Government has authorized the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir to take control of telecommunication services during public safety situations and national emergencies. As per a Gazette notification issued under Article 239 of the Constitution, the President has empowered the LG to exercise state government powers under Section 20(2) of the Telecommunications Act, 2023. The move allows the administration to intercept signals, direct decryption of messages, and block transmissions within the Union Territory. It also enables swift suspension of telecom and internet services when required in the interest of national security and public safety, subject to presidential oversight.
