The ship
Armoured cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi was built in 1901 in the Italian shipyard Cantieri Ansaldo di Genova-Sestri. 111,76 m long and 18,25 m wide, it was armed with 33 canons of various calibars and 4 torpedo pipes. At the moment of its sinking there were 578 crew members on board out of which 53 died during the attack.

Historical background
On 17 July 1915 a group of allied battleships under the command of admiral Trifari whose headquarters were actually at the Garibaldi cruiser sailed out of the Brindisi harbour with a mission to destroy the railway Sarajevo-Herceg Novi. The fleet was discovered in the night of 18 July when the Austrian-Hungarian submarine U4, commanded by Rudolf Singule, interecepted it near the place called Molunat.

The U4 launched two torpedoes towards the Garibaldi cruiser which, heavily hit, sank within several minutes. After the Garibaldi went down, the rest of the allied fleetwithdrew back to Italy.
