Move Your Feet, Not the Crop

Move Your Feet, Not the Crop

When a photo doesn’t look right, many photographers reach for the same fix:
Cropping.
But cropping usually treats the symptom, not the problem.
A much stronger habit is simple:
Move your feet.
Instead of fixing the photo later, adjust the scene before you press the shutter.
Try reversing the order of decisions:
1️⃣ Decide the subject — What is the photo actually about? 2️⃣ Build the frame — Where should the edges land? 3️⃣ Move your position — Step left, right, forward, or back until the background looks clean
Small movements can change everything.
A distracting object disappears. Lines stop intersecting the subject. The background becomes calmer.
And suddenly the photo feels intentional.
Strong photographers rarely rely on fixing images later.
They solve problems in the moment.
Because the best composition tool you have isn’t editing…
It’s your feet.
Save this so you remember next time you’re about to crop.
And tell me in the comments:
Do you crop more, or move more when shooting?
