A Rare Yellowstone Wildlife Moment

We spotted these rare Harlequin Ducks on the Yellowstone River, at LeHardy Rapids, during our stay in Yellowstone National Park.

They only spend a short time here each spring, to breed. The female will soon leave the main river to nest along smaller streams and creeks, while the male heads back toward the Pacific coast. She raises the ducklings on her own before eventually returning west to reunite with him.

Watching them rest in the rushing river was such a special moment, especially knowing how rare they are.
