FIJI ODYSSEY: 1. CORAL SPAWNING AT ROYAL DAVUI

This video is about annual CORAL SPAWNING at Royal Davui Resort in the Fiji Islands. Each year, on a certain couple of magical nights (depending on the month, moon phase, tides and temperature), corals, and some other reef species, have a mass spawning, filling the sea with their spawn. The Fijians knew this, and traditionally named the months of October and November after the spawning of the balolo worm (Eunice viridis). Little is known scientifically about the details of coral spawning in Fiji, and particularly the other reef species such as the balolo. Marine scientist Dr Leon Zann (Oceans & Islands productions), who lived in Fiji for many years, visits the exclusive Royal Davui Resort in Beqa Lagoon, diving each night for a week to video the activity. Royal Davui (owned by the Southwick family) is a perfect location, surrounded by a beautiful coral reef a few meters from each vila, and very safe for night diving. It should be an exciting (and very safe) attraction for visitors in the future. Other videos on Royal Davui describe the balolo, the coral reef, and deep sea fishing.
